3 STEPS TO A MODERN FARMHOUSE KITCHEN

When we revealed the Glendale kitchen last week we referenced that the client asked for a modern farmhouse style kitchen.  Today we wanted to share with you guys the key elements that help create that look.  At it’s core, a modern farmhouse kitchen is a classic kitchen design.  In order to keep it from turning country looking, it is key to keep things bright, light and airy.  That is why we laid the foundation of this kitchen by painting the original cabinets white, choosing white counter tops, the apron front sink, and the beautiful bridge faucet.  All of these elements are beautiful, timeless pieces, so you won’t be facing another kitchen re-do in 10 years.  Ain’t nobody got time..or money for that.

So, once you have the basics in place, you can add in elements that create the modern farmhouse look.

1. Texture, Texture, Texture

The most important element in creating the look is adding lots of texture in the space.  We achieved this in a couple of different ways.  The first was the shiplap that we added over the range hood.  While it didn’t photograph well, it adds so much visual interest to the space.  L O V E!  An element that really brought in texture, and helped create a hint of a rustic vibe, were the gorgeous reclaimed wood shelves.  They helped bring a lot of warmth to the kitchen.  Another really simple way to add texture is through accessories.  We chose accessories that had a lot of texture in them.  Ribbed bowls, wood cutting boards, wire baskets, textured canisters with wooden tops.  All of these elements alone are pretty subtle, but when you put them all together they really help create a collected, layered look in the space.

2. MIX THOSE METALS

I promise I am not leading you astray on this one.  Gone are the days were all of your metal finishes had to match.  In this space alone we have four or five different metal finishes.  The barndoor hardware and shelf brackets are iron, the faucet and the cabinet hardware are polished nickel, the pendant lights are a dark gray metal, and the barstools a light silver metal.  All of these finishes are so timeless, because again, who wants to have to re-do another kitchen in 10 years.  Together each one of these metals is beautiful, but they create so much more visual interest when they are all mixed together.

3. USE FARMHOUSE ELEMENTS THAT DON’T SCREAM COUNTRY

This one is key.  Country does not have to be all farm animals and gingham.  There is a subtle way to incorporate some really cool farmhouse elements without the kitchen looking country.  I mean, what is more farmhouse than a barn door for goodness sakes, but no one would look at that gorgeous element and think it was country.  Same thing with the reclaimed wood shelves and iron brackets.  We also chose more rustic lighting with the barn style pendant lights in a metal finish and the gorgeous iron chandelier over the dining table.  All of these elements helped create a sophisticated, farmhouse feel without being too over the top. And if one day the client’s tastes changed they could easily update a few small elements to change the look of the space without spending much money.  Add in sleek, modern shelving in the place of the wood shelves, put some gorgeous gold globe pendants over the island, change out the kitchen chandelier and voila you have a glam, modern kitchen.  Easy as that!
