DECORATING A MANTLE FOR CHRISTMAS

I don’t know about you guys, but I feel so behind the ball on Christmas decorating this.  I have a really large mantle in our family room that our TV is mounted over and I have been looking around for some inspiration on Pinterest because I wanted to really make it a focal point of our decorating this year.  Today I am going to share some of my tried and true holiday mantle decorating tips and some products you should check out if you are wanting to recreate some of these amazing looks in your own home.

YOU CAN NEVER GO WRONG WITH GREENERY

Greenery is the absolute perfect addition to a holiday mantle.  I prefer live greenery, especially since you can get garlands so cheap at places like Trader Joe’s.  If you don’t have a Trader Joe’s nearby, you can always use cuttings from your Christmas tree (or ask the guys at the tree lot if you can take some of theirs).  If you do want to go with a faux garland then I would be prepared to invest in an nice one so that it looks more realistic and can be used year after year.  Think of it as an investment piece.  Places like Frontgate, Ballard Designs, and Grandin Road have pretty ones and I will link some more of my favorites below.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

This will come to a surprise to absolutely no one, but do not like a completely overdone mantle.  I definitely can appreciate the ribbon and ornaments, and all the bells and whistles that go on a more traditional garland, but that is not my personal jam.  I fall under the less is more category.  I love the idea of adding florals (or fruit like in the garland above) and then some well placed accessories to keep things more on the minimal side.

BUT DON’T FORGET THE SPARKLE

Just because I am a minimalist doesn’t mean that I do not totally dig a little sparkle, shimmer, and twinkle.  I am obsessed with all the little cooper and wired lights that I am seeing everywhere.  I actually found a few boxes in the dollar spot at target.  I love that they are battery powered so you don’t have chords hanging everywhere.  Along with the lights add some gold accessories, ornaments, a little glitter to the mix and you are good to go.

BUT DON’T FORGET THE STOCKINGS

I am definitely a Christmas traditionalist at heart, but I really feel like a Christmas mantle isn’t complete without the stockings.  I think this is especially true if you have kids in the house.  Whether you have family heirloom stockings or you change them out every year, they are a must.  This year I am really loving all the stocking with texture that are out there.  I love using the stockings to add that layer and bring some softness and visual interest to the mantle.
