OUR BATHROOM STYLING FORMULA

Bathroom styling can be hard because the majority of the items in there are functional and serving obvious purposes.  So in order to inject some style and personality in bathrooms, we rely heavily on fixtures and finishes when designing a bathroom.  Mirrors, hardware, fixtures, title work, accessories, this is where the bathroom styling really gets good.  Today I am going to share with you my formula for styling the bathroom of your dreams.  The best part about this formula is that it works regardless of whether your style is traditional, modern, vintage or somewhere in between.

Okay, now let’s see this formula work in real life.

STATEMENT TILE

We love statement tile.  Some people think that means it has to be loud, printed, and quick to date.  That is definitely not the case.  While statement tile can mean the above, it can also just mean beautiful, traditional tile laid or used in a non-traditional way.  We love the way Erin, from Elements of Style, laid her gorgeous marble tile in a herringbone pattern.  It is details like this that don’t cost much more money to implement, but definitely create a designed look to a space that makes it very special.

We are also super on-board with the cement tile craze that is currently sweeping the design world.  These tiles can really make a room pop.  We like to see them paired with a more neutral, simple design so that the tiles can really stand out.

FABULOUS FIXTURES

Fixtures are the eye candy of the bathroom.  They are where you can really take a risk and show some of your personal style.  We always recommend to our clients that if they are wanting to take advantage of current design trends, fixtures are a great place to do it.  If styles or tastes change over time, fixtures can easily be replaced without major renovations necessary and can change the look of the entire room.

AWESOME ACCESSORIES

Accessories are another way to lend a subtly designed look to a space.  We love using trays to group items together, but another less expected accessory is to use a small mirror as a tray to put your bathroom essentials on.  The bathroom is similar to the kitchen in that counter space is  at a premium and you have to be careful not to put to much on the counters or it just looks like a cluttered, disorganized mess.  Stick to the things you really need and use and then add one or two touches that make the space special.  You can never go wrong with a beautiful candle or fresh flowers in the bathroom.

LIGHTING YOU LOVE

Lighting is a critical component in a bathroom design.  No one wants a dark and dingy bathroom space when they are trying to get ready in the morning.  We try to incorporate natural light in our bathroom designs whenever possible, but that is not always possible.  The important thing to remember in planning lighting for your bathroom is to mix your lighting sources.  You want overhead lighting in the form of recessed lighting or a statement chandelier.  You also want to remember to include lighting in the shower.  I hate walking into a dark shower space, especially if you have a tub/shower combo.  You then want to include vanity lighting.  We like using either scones next to the mirrors or over-mirror lighting.  This is another great place to take a risk and do something a little unexpected.

MARVELOUS MIRRORS

This is an area where it pays to not go builder grade.  Mirrors can really dress up a space and add a lot of visual interest to the room.  We love unusual shapes in the space, like the hexagon mirrors below, but we are still suckers for traditional options like circle, square or rectangle.
